My Dear Life

Omega-3

This is going to be a really quick guide on omega-3 as I always get tons of questions about them.

What is Omega-3?

Omega 3 is a type of essential fatty acids and the “omega-3” refers to the chemical structures where first double bond is present at the third carbon from the omega (methyl) end but who cares? Simply put, they are nutrients that help our body to maintain good health. List of possible benefits includes cardiovascular health, diabetes, eye health, neuropsychiatric condition (i.e. depression,  Alzheimer’s disease), women’s health (i.e. dysmenorrhea, night sweats), and inflammatory conditions (i.e. arthritis).

What are some considerations to choose a good Omega-3 supplement?

EPA and DHA

  • Look at how much EPA and DHA are included: Bottle will have all sorts of different confusing numbers but the number you need to watch for is the sum of EPA and DHA.
  • Choose the one that has at least 60% or more of EPA+DHA in concentration.
  • Example: Product A has 400mg EPA and 200mg DHA in 1000mg of Fish oil vs Product B has 300mg EPA and 200mg DHA in 1000mg of Fish oil. Product A has 60% concentration of EPA and DHA compared to 50% in Product B. Then choose Product A.

Quality

  • Choose a product that is USP verified (in United States) or that has Natural Product Number (in Canada).
  • USP verified products have been tested for heavy metals (i.e. methylmercury, PCBs, Dioxin) before coming to market.
  • If any product has strong fishy or rancid smell or taste, discard the product.
  • Omega-3 supplements are easily oxidized. Some products have added Vitamin E to prevent oxidation.

What are some precautions before taking Omega-3 supplements?

  • People with seafood allergy may develop a allergic reaction in theory.
  • Dose higher than 3g (the sum of DHA and EPA) may inhibit platelet aggregation, meaning possible bleeding issues (i.e. bruising)
  • GI side effects (heartburn, nausea, fishy burp, diarrhea) may happen.
  • There may be possible drug interactions with prescription medications. Always consult with a health professional before starting any supplements.
  • Storage is important. To prevent oxidation spoilage, Keep in cool, dry places, free from light.

Bottom Line: How does Super Daddy take a Omega-3 supplement?

Super Daddy takes 1g (DHA+EPA) once daily with a meal but, sometimes even up to three times a day when needed to improve some symptoms such as having pain from inflammation or weak immune system. Also, here are some tips when purchasing the product. Super Daddy tries to avoid those that come in a transparent bottle as light can easily oxidize omega-3.
