My Dear Life

Melatonin

These days, many people suffer from insomnia. They come to pharmacy and ask about melatonin products many times. This post will cover most common questions that I get from patients.

How does it affect my sleep?

It may reduce the time to fall asleep by 10 minutes and increase total sleep time by 8 minutes.

How much should I take?

Start with 1 to 3 mg of immediate release tablet 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. There’s not much evidence of using timed or delayed-release product for insomnia.

Does it cause dependence?

No. It does not seem to lead to dependence. Thus, you do not need to taper down when stopping.

Can I use it for long term?

Caution needed but in general, it is likely safe up to 6 months and possibly up to 2 years.

Does it cause next day sedation?

No. Melatonin is generally well tolerated.

I’m old. Can I still take melatonin?

Yes. As you get aged, your body produces less melatonin and melatonin may be a safer option than other prescription medications such as benzodiazepines. Start with low dose i.e. 2mg. Before you try any melatonin, try sleep hygiene first.

I’m pregnant/breastfeeding. Is it safe to try?

No. Not enough studies to confirm its safety.

Disclaimer: Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements to ensure it is appropriate for you.
